The Most Important Cyber Career Thing

Here’s some advice for job applicants who seek a cybersecurity position. One of the most, if not THE most important characteristics of a cybersecurity professional is curiosity. How does one demonstrate curiosity during an interview? By being insatiably curious. Ask questions — lots of them. When you’re given a scenario and ask what you’d do, ask about the context. Make it a conversation. But most importantly, if you aren’t sincerely curious about cyber, don’t attempt to enter the field. You won’t be successful. Nobody has all the answers. Even we old-timers know very little of what there is to know. But we love the opportunities to learn that a career in cybersecurity demands. Embrace the questions, and you’ll become one of us. Learn to appreciate the uncertainty that comes with having to seek out questions, knowing that more questions may be all you find, and you’ll probably succeed in this business.
